Chennai, Dec 3 DMDK leader Vijayakant today faulted the successive AIADMK and DMK regimes in Tamil Nadu, for their "inaction" in solving rain-related woes in the state, especially in the capital, Chennai.

In a statement here, the actor-politician alleged that the two parties were only involved in mudslinging on each other during their respective rules and did nothing "concrete" to address the problems.

The same "official protocol" of Ministers and officials visiting the affected areas under media glare continued in every rule, he said.

Criticising both parties for not evolving a long-term policy on the effective draining of flood water, Vijaykant said the flood situation was worst in Chennai where sewage water mixed with stagnant water, causing hardships to the residents. (Agencies)

Captain Vijayakanth assures youth of jobs

Mon, 15 Dec, 2008,02:33 PM
.
DMDK leader Vijayakanth has said the target of providing one lakh job opportunities to youth will be achieved soon.

Speaking at the fourth phase of the job fair conducted by the party at Anna Nagar (West) in Chennai, the DMDK leader accused the Tamilnadu government of making all sorts of troubles to disrupt the job fair.
.
‘We’d given an advance amount to a school for conducting the fourth phase of the job fair in Chennai but the school administration was threatened’, Vijaykanth said adding that following this, the party had to find another school for the purpose.

Further, some of the leading companies which were participating in the fair were also threatened, he said. ‘Against all odds, we successfully provided employment opportunities to 10, 000 educated youth so far through job fairs conducted in Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, he added.

The State government should not get involved in disrupting the job fair instead should extend support, he added. Accusing the Tamilnadu government of not initiating welfare measures, Vijaykanth said their primary focus was on having alliance only to safeguard the DMK.

On the spectrum issue, the first family of the State joined hands only to cover up the scandal, he said, adding that he would continuously raise voice in this regard. DMDK is pioneering in providing free computer training and job opportunities, he said.

Ameer has reportedly decided to enroll himself as a primary member in actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth's DMDK

November 13th, 2008

Kollywoood directors taking to politics isn't something new: we have seen the likes of Vijaya T. Rajendhar and K, Bhagyaraj. Ameer appears to be the latest addition to this list. Even in his wildest of dreams, Ameer wouldn't have thought that his speech at the Rameswaram rally would end up in a jail sentence for him. Circumstances got big on him and he had to stay put behind the bars for some days.

Having taken baptism by fire, Ameer has reportedly decided to enroll himself as a primary member in actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth's DMDK and is even considering contesting in the ensuing assembly election. Ameer is likely to meet Vijaykanth later this week. As expected, his move has met with appreciation and criticism with friends welcoming and detractors dissecting it.

Ameer's well-wishers are reportedly trying to impress upon him the fact that at a time when he is successful as a director in Kollywood, his political foray is totally uncalled for. Ameer, though, is all set to plunge into electioneering in the ensuing parliamentary elections early next year. The decision on which party he'd align himself with is what everyone is waiting to see.

Local DMDK cadres brought them lunch

Relief evades thousands of homeless
29 Nov 2008

CHENNAI: As many as 15,000 people living along the Adyar river were evacuated till

Friday evening. Many of them, however, were not fortunate
enough to get the food
supplied by the Chennai Corporation. Several areas either received no food or got very little.

The situation was particularly grave in Dr Khan Nagar, Nesapakkam, where more than 14 streets were submerged. The food brought in by the corporation staff at 11 am was inadequate and was sent back by the residents.

Dr Khan Nagar was trapped between the swollen Adyar and rainwater gushing in from Valasaravakkam, Alwar Thiru Nagar, Ramavaram, Rayalar Nagar and Nesapakkam. “Hundreds of people were waiting for food since morning. But the civic officials were nowhere in sight to enumerate the affected people and so the food supply was minimal. It is sheer disregard for the people’s welfare. Will the same yardstick be applied to more affluent residents?” said Kumar, a resident. Later, the locals pooled in money and had a community lunch.

The scene was no different in neighbouring Soolaipallam. About 150 families of Tamarai Vinayagam Street, affected by rains, were taken to the corporation school in Nesapakkam. Residents of adjoining areas like Nagathamman Koil Street, most of them daily wagers whose houses were also affected, chose to stay back. “We do not want to go to the corporation school where our friends haven’t got lunch,” said Nagavalli, a resident. Local DMDK cadres brought them lunch.

In neighbouring Annai Sathya Nagar, corporation staff left a small food vessel at a shop on Venkatraman Salai. But that was just enough for 10 families. Then, local leaders entered the scene and cooked food for residents of the entire locality. Later, residents staying at the Nesapakkam school also came in with food.

Inmates of the Government Model HSS in Saidapet complained that they didn’t get anything since morning. “It is 1 pm, but we haven’t got breakfast till now. The officials are neither giving us food nor allowing us to cook on the school campus,” said Arumugam, a resident. Some residents took refuge in the new bus terminus at Saidapet.

Vijayakant demands for immediate fuel price cut

November 23, 2008
Chennai (PTI): Slamming the Centre for refusing to reduce the fuel prices despite plunging crude rates, DMDK founder Vijayakant on Sunday demanded for an immediate price cut to 'stabilise' the economy.

The Centre had hiked the fuel prices when crude oil cost was USD 147 a barrel. It has now reduced to USD 50, the fuel price also is expected to go down further, the actor-politician said in a statement here.

"While Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has ruled out any cut in prices, petroleum officials maintain that the prices are not being slashed to manage under recoveries. The Centre should reduce the duty on fuel which would automatically help in reducing the prices," he said.

It was only logical that the rates should be slashed as the global crude prices were now going down, he said.

"That should be the intention of the government striving for public welfare," he said, adding the cut in fuel prices would automatically bring down the manufacturing costs and others, helping in "easing of the inflation and spiralling prices."

He also slammed Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram for asking the industries to reduce prices of commodities to help the economy, and said the government should lead in this regard and reduce petroleum prices.

He asked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to write to the Centre demanding reduction of fuel prices.

Supreme Court issues notice to EC on DMDK plea on poll symbol

Posted: Nov 26, 2008
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Election Commission on a Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) petition challenging the legality of one of its rules for recognising a political outfit as a “state-level party” and allotting a fixed election symbol to it in the state.

Taking up the petition filed by Tamil actor-turned-state legislator Vijayakant A, who had won the Virudhachalam seat of Tamil Nadu Assembly in the 2006 elections, a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan granted two weeks to the EC to respond.

The Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order of the poll panel stipulates that a political party would be recognised as a state-level party, only if it has secured at least six per cent of the total votes polled in the state, besides winning at least two seats in the last Assembly or general elections.

However, the petitioner submitted before the court that his party DMDK had in the last 2006 Assembly elections secured 8.33 per cent of the total votes polled, though it managed to win merely one seat (his own).
Appearing for the petitioner, senior counsel K K Venugopal asserted that the actor’s party would come to power in the state after the next Assembly elections. But the Bench also comprising Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal observed, “If he was so confident of sweeping the poll, why was he bothered about recognition and the election symbol?”

The DMDK had fielded a total of 232 candidates for the 234-seat Assembly and his candidates together had polled a total of 2,746,900 votes, the court was told.

The actor stated that there was no definite and scientific relation between the seats won and the votes secured by a party in a democracy adopting the “first-past-the-post” system of election.

Citing examples of votes polled and seats won by two other key parties, DMK and AIADMK, in the state, it was challenged that the DMK despite securing 10,768,559 votes in the 2006 Assembly elections won merely 61 seats while the DMK won 96 seats despite securing merely 87,28,716 votes.

The actor sought to prove the lack of any scientific relation between the votes polled and seats won by a party in an election by citing similar figures for various Assembly and the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere.

The actor urged the court to quash the said rule for allotting the fixed symbols to the political parties and sought recognition for his outfit as a state-level party.

Vijaykant shift stance;hints about alliance

Theni, Nov 23: Deviating from the stand to go it alone with people's support eversince the DMDK party was started, its leader Vijayakanth has indicated that he could go for alliance if the party cadres wished so. Presiding over a mass wedding organised by his party here today, Vijayakanth urged the government to provide relief to the poor and middle class people who had been hit hard by the steep rise in the prices of essential commodities, asked the cadres if it was good to have alliance with the ruling party if they agreed to implement all their suggestions including the relief.

When the cadres said "parpom"(let us see), he said he did not want to garland the shadow of "alliance now" and when the election comes he would discuss with the district office bearers and take a decision according to their wish.

Coming down heavily on the government for the steep price hike, he said the government could immediately give a relief of Rs.500 for each card holder to overcome the price rise.

Each couple were given groceries for one month, vessels, cot, almirah, gold mangalya sutra. Cost of wedding for each couple came to Rs.54000, he said. - Agencies

DMDMK demands probe by SC Judge on 3G Spectrum contract

Chennai, Oct 7 : Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder and actor-politician Vijayakanth today demanded a judicial probe headed by a Supreme Court Judge into the alleged irregularities in the award of 3G Spectrum contract for private telecom service providers.

Talking to newspersons here, he said Minister for IT and Telecommunications A Raja, however, should be dropped from the Cabinet, before ordering the Judicial probe.

''It should be headed by a Supreme Court Judge. The Minister concerned should be dropped only then the entire truth will come to light'', Vijayakanth said.

The DMDK's demand comes in the wake of allegations by a section of the public sector BSNL employees that there were large scale irregularities, running to the tune of Rs 25,000 crores, in the award of contract for 3G Spectrum to private telecom operators.

It may be recalled that the UPA government announced the guidelines for the auction of spectrum to launch the third-generation (3G) mobile phone services in the country in August.

The 3G service will not only allow much faster communications but also a wide range of applications such as high-speed net access, video calls, fast music and video downloads, interactive gaming and global positioning over Internet.

Spectrum in 2.1 GHz band will be allocated for 3G (GSM) telecom services throughout the country and some 60 MHz of spectrum was available for wireless telephony.

For 3G (CDMA) services, three slots will be available as spectrum will be auctioned in 450 MHz, 800 MHz and 1,900 MHz when it becomes available.

As per the guidelines, initially five operators will get 3G license and subject to availability it would go up to ten operators. In Delhi and Mumbai, there will be two to three operators due to shortage of spectrum.

A reserve price of Rs 160 crore had been fixed for Delhi, Mumbai and all 'A' category circles, Rs 80 crores for Kolkata and 'B' category circles and Rs 30 crore for category 'C' circles.

The base price will add up to Rs 2,020 crore for an all-India licence and the government expects to earn more than Rs 30,000 to 40,000 crore from the auction of spectrum for 3G services.

Free rice is election broth, says Vijayakant

15 Sep 2008
CHENNAI: Flaying the state government for its cheap rice scheme, actor and DMDK leader, Vijayakant on Sunday described it as an 'election gimmick'
only meant to help the ruling DMK to garner votes in the Lok Sabha election.

The quality of the rice, now sold at Re 1 per kilo in ration shops, was "very bad" and the new scheme helped the government to use up its PDS stocks, Vijayakant said. The DMDK, launched in September 2005, observed the party's third anniversary at a function in the city.

It was not sops that people wanted, but jobs as the rising inflation and consequent price rise were a severe burden on them, he said, claiming they were fed up with the freebies offered by the government. A few days after it announced the cheap rice scheme, the DMK government on Sunday came up with yet another sop, that of providing 10 cooking ingredients at a subsidised rate.

The government should focus more on creating job opportunities instead, said Vijayakant, promising one lakh jobs for youth across the state. Applications would be collected from young people across Tamil Nadu and based on an assessment, the party would help one lakh youth to get jobs, he said. On October 18, the party's youth wing will hold a rally and public meeting in Chennai. Non committal on the alliance issue, the actor said while regional parties (like the DMK and AIADMK) opposed the DMDK, national parties encouraged it.

Tamilnadu: Black MGR a force to reckon with

5 Jul 2008
THE FOUNDER-president of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Tamil film star Vijayakanth, it is admitted in enlightened circles, has made a successful entry into Tamilnadu politics. His success has come about in spite of his paddling his own canoe. He has not allied with any of the political parties, national or regional, so far. His view that his party is a force to reckon with in spite of its nascent origin and hence there is no need for his party to ride piggyback on any of the parties, national or regional, prominent in Tamilnadu, seems to carry conviction. He commands a big following in Tamilnadu and unlike the other regional outfits in Tamilnadu, the Dravidian parties included, has given the impression that he would approach all issues from a national perspective and will not allow parochial tendencies to creep in.

In Vridhachalam, the constituency that he represents, he has launched several developmental activities. He is one of the few non-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), non-All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and non-Congress party candidates to have won. He has been in constant touch with the electorate. What is more, he has been accessible to them. The goodwill he has earned has in turn earned the admiration of the rank and file and some leaders of other political parties, although a thread of grudge runs through it at times. So much so, the DMK leadership hit him below the belt by insinuating that a Telugu-ite should not be allowed to rule over the people of Tamilnadu. Being one from neither the ruling party nor the major opposition, the welfare and developmental activities he launched in his constituency did not receive adequate support from the state government. In what seems to be a part of a virtuous circle in the offing, he is blessed with a wife who has proved in a short time that she is politically savvy too like her husband.

At a party function in Kanchipuram, 70km along the coast from Chennai, Vijayakanth’s wife Premalatha invited the people to see for themselves her husband’s contribution to his constituency’s development, although he received little help from the government in his efforts. The people of Vridhachalam were happy with his performance. Her husband would repeat the achievement over the entire state of Tamilnadu if his party was voted to power in the state. She wanted the entire state to benefit in the same manner as Vridhachalam.

Premalatha is often accompanied by her brother Satish and the two command enormous clout in the party. She reminded the audience that the DMDK was not just another new political party as described by some politicians. (Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK supremo, about a couple of months ago, dismissed the alleged threat posed by DMDK by remarking that after a spell of rain, it was natural for some moss to proliferate and a la the moss, the new parties would fade into oblivion). Perhaps referring to this remark, Premalatha said that the DMDK had grown over thirty years from a film fans association into a political party, thanks to the love and affection the people of the state had rained on it. She dared the other political parties to contest the elections on their own (without entering into any alliance).

Only Vijayakanth had declared that he was ready to fight the Lok Sabha elections on his own. But Premalatha did not explain why Vijayakanth publicly declared sometime ago that he was being wooed by both the DMK and the AIADMK. Did he imply that he was open to an alliance with either of them?

However, if the two Left parties parted ways with the DMK-Congress front on the nuclear deal (it is a certainty now), they might be inclined to consider an alliance with Vijayakanth. The DMK would also be interested in the DMDK as a substitute for the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) with whom it recently snapped all ties. But Vijayakanth had better be careful with the DMK and the PMK. The former in particular will not hesitate to hit below the belt. If Vijayakanth becomes invincible, the DMK will rake up his Telugu roots (Vijayakanth is a Telugu-ite by birth) because even the octogenarian leader of the DMK, M Karunanidhi is yet to become a statesman (vide, “It’s time Karunanidhi became a statesman”).

DMDK to boycott all party meeting on Oct 14

Chennai, Oct 12
The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) actor-politician and founder-president Vijayakanth will boycott the October 14 all-party meeting convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, demanding Centre's intervention to stop genocide against the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

In a statement here, Mr Vijayakanth said the Chief Minister had convened the meeting only to divert the attention of the people from a host of issues faced by the DMK, like power cuts, rising prices and the alleged irregularities in 2G spectrum allotment.

He said while the Indian Government was prepared to hold talks with the banned Naga outfit like NSCN, why it should not urge the Sri Lankan Government to adopt a similar stand and hold talks to arrive at a peaceful solution for the decade-long ethnic crisis.

Mr Vijayakanth asked why the idea of inviting all parties did not crop up while calling for a public meeting by the DMK and took objection to the party not condemning the Centre's action in providing Radars and other assistance to the Sri Lankan troops.

Mr Karunanidhi, without wasting time, should use his good offices at the Centre, exert pressure and urge India to intervene to stop the killing of innocent Tamils, he added.

DMDK president Vijayakanth has accused the State and Central governments

October 31, Chennai, - DMDK president Vijayakanth has accused the State and Central governments of not ensuring a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

‘The Sri Lankan Tamils issue came in handy for Tamilnadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to divert people’s attention from power cut, price rise and other problems....

He enacted a drama by announcing the resignation of Tamil Nadu MPs if the Centre did not ensure ceasefire in Sri Lanka in two weeks (by 29 October).

But neither has the war ended there nor have the MPs resigned,’ the actor-politician said in a release here.

‘While India wants to retain its hold in South Asia by helping Sri Lanka with arms, Sri Lanka would use the same against innocent Tamils in the name of war against LTTE.’

And neither would India ask Sri Lanka to stop the attacks. And all this while, the Tamilnadu government would be shedding crocodile tears,’ he said.

As for contributing towards the Sri Lankan Tamils Relief Fund, the DMDK would make its contributions to the district collectors, Vijayakant said.

‘Captain’ Vijayakanth Chennai meeting promises - clean TN

Posted by admin On October - 18 - 2008

In what could well be his bitterest ever attack targetting the DMK government and to a milder extent Ms Jayalalithaa heading the opposition AIADMK, ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth on Saturday said the people of Tamil Nadu had suffered both enough and it was time for his DMDK to usher in change with a clean administration.

“There is corruption everywhere, in every thing. They are looting. Even the present power cut is only to help them take bribes in the darkness. Both of them have indulged in corruption and have slapped bribe cases against each other. Should you still vote for them?” he asked. In what could well be his bitterest ever attack targeting the DMK government and to a milder extent Ms Jayalalithaa heading the opposition AIADMK, ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth on Saturday said the people of Tamil Nadu had suffered both enough and it was time for his DMDK to usher in change with a clean administration.

“There is corruption everywhere, in every thing. They are looting. Even the present power cut is only to help them take bribes in the darkness. Both of them have indulged in corruption and have slapped bribe cases against each other. Should you still vote for them? I promise corruption-free administration so that the people could live in comfort,” the star-politician told a huge youth wing rally held here in connection with the party’s fourth anniversary.

Promising all-round development, equal educational opportunities and jobs, he said, “If the DMDK comes to power, I will remove the power-cuts in just five months. I will not reveal the method now, as they would steal my idea.” He alleged that the ruling party and the government had ‘intimidated’ him. “My party followers and I are not cowards but are like the banana trees that grow even after being chopped,” he said in his spirited speech lustily cheered by the followers.

Turning to the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, Mr Vijayakanth charged chief minister M. Karunanidhi of indifference towards the tragic plight of the Tamils. “I had donated Rs.6 lakh for the tsunami relief here but gave Rs.12 lakh for the tsunami work in Sri Lanka. Has anyone in these two parties given any such help? Can you throw away your government on this Lankan Tamil issue and face the election?” Pointing to the DMK government’s ambitious free-TV scheme, he said priorities were misplaced. “Why gift a colour TV when there is no power at home?” He asked his followers to ensure that the party won all the 40 seats in the coming LS polls and win power at the next state elections. “Is it an ordinary achievement that we have now 27 per cent votes within just three years after launching the party?”

DMDK set to rock city

The props and plans are all ready in a larger-than-life manner for the first youth conference of the DMDK to be held here tomorrow.

And all of them confirm that Vijayakanth is at heart, an actor: A 10,000 member security team to monitor the rally and conference activities, a ‘commando force’ with walkie-talkies all over the city to ensure that vehicles coming from different parts of Tamilnadu reach the venue on time, a team of 100 doctors with ambulances to take care of ‘any emergency situation’.
.
And other things to be mentioned include a 145-feet long stage replicating the Secretariat and Parliament, colourful digital banners all over the city challenging those of the DMK and the AIADMK and a 200-feet Vijayakanth portrait by artist Dakshinamoorthy, who, by the way, is attempting a Guinness record through this .

Meanwhile, it is expected that a few important resolutions would be passed at the meeting by DMDK president Vijayakanth, who is aiming at showing his party’s strength and to score a few brownie points through the much publicised conference.

DMDK sources said that the party’s stand on forging an alliance for the forthcoming Parliamentary polls would be made clear at the conference.

Also, a massive rally has been planned from Chepauk to the conference venue, Island grounds, in the afternoon. DMDK youth wing leader and Vijayakanth’s brother-in-law L K Sudeesh would lead the rally which will be witnessed by the party leaders from a special stage erected near the Manroe statue.

It is to be noted that Vijayakanth recently alleged that the ruling DMK was trying to put obstacles in the run up to the conference by directing private bus operators to return the advances received by them.

‘We have booked private buses across the State to transport party workers for the conference. But the operators are returning the advance paid by us following threats from the State government’, he charged.

He said well grown parties like the DMK should be a role model for the growth of new parties like the DMDK. ‘The DMK should advise the new parties to grow instead of trying to destroy them’.

Vijayakanth said the party cadres were eagerly looking forward to the conference. He sought the cooperation of the Transport department and the police for the successful conduct of the conference, being organised to commemorate the party’s fourth founding day and Anna’s birth centenary also.

Politician Vijayakantha dons cop’s role in reel life

OLD ONE BUT GOOD ONE!

Chennai: A good cop who fights terrorism and it's impact on the youth — that's what Captain Vijayakanth is doing these days in reel life. His yet-to-be released 150th film is called Arasangam (Government) — a title that perhaps reflects his ultimate political ambition.

"There is no political message in this film. Whatever I have said in the past, I have said in this one too. Maybe I will make another film to give out all my political views and the mistakes of this government," DMDK President and Tamil superstar Vijayakanth says.

As he dances to the drum beats in his film, in real life politics he's getting ready for his next big political challenge —the Lok Sabha elections.

Vijayakanth’s emergence as a strong third force with over eight per cent votes in the last assembly elections has meant that both Jayalalithaa and the DMK are increasingly wary of his party.

But to turn his votes into seats and to fight a Lok Sabha election he needs an ally.

"I have fought alone and I do not want any alliance. Everyone else is speaking about my party and that shows that we are a powerful force," Vijayakantha says.

Staying solo and taking on the villains is easy on screen, but in the real life political battle is a different story, and observers feel Vijayakanth will have to answer the tricky alliance question sooner than later.

Jayalalitha not heir of MGR's legacy: Vijaykanth

Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijaykanth has refuted AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha's claim of being the true heir to the political legacy of former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran and termed her ascent as a mere "accident".

"Jayalalitha emerging as the leader of the AIADMK is an accident," Vijayakanth told reporters near Erode on Monday.

The charismatic actor-turned-politician M.G. Ramachandran - popularly known as MGR - had broken away from DMK and formed the AIADMK in 1972.

"The former chief minister and AIADMK leader (MGR) never declared Jayalalitha as his political heir," said Vijayakanth, who likes to be called as Karuppu (dark) MGR.

He also alleged Jayalalitha - a top actress in her younger days - "had never spent a single rupee for the poor when she was an actress".

"But I have been involved in lot of welfare activities for the past 25 years. I give Rs.50,000 every year to the home for the dumb and deaf at MGR's residence at Ramavaram," said the actor, who is also an MLA and the president of his one-year old MDMK party.

"I never said I am MGR's heir. But I am just following his footsteps like Ekalavya in Mahabharata. He took Dhronacharya as his teacher, MGR is my political guru."

"I want to establish a clean and corruption free government like he did,", he said.

He said the DMDK would contest on its own in the 2009 parliamentary elections and would win all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

DMDK’s scheme for visually challenged

launching a life: DMDK president Vijayakant inaugurating a project for visually-challenged persons in Chennai on Sunday. Premalatha Vijayakant is in the picture

CHENNAI: Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam leader Vijayakant on Sunday launched ‘Light a Life,’ a project to provide holistic career training to the visually challenged people.

The training will include personality development, conversational English, basics of computer, advanced JAWS (job access with speech) and entrepreneurship training and counselling. It will be given through 60 computer education centres in districts. K. Pandiarajan, observer for the DMDK’s central Chennai unit and the brain behind the project, said that besides professional job registration and support, the project envisaged creation of a venture capital fund for the physically challenged.

“Any candidate with entrepreneurial spirit can draw a capital support ranging from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000. If three people form a team, they can draw up to Rs. 1 lakh,” he said.

Mr. Vijayakant said the DMDK was the only party in the State to have a separate wing for the physically challenged people. DMDK presidium chairman Panruti S. Ramachandran said the State government was only implementing the schemes envisaged by Mr. Vijayakant.

Mrs. Premalatha Vijayakant gave away identity cards to 300 persons to enable them to undergo the training.

DMDK president Vijayakant at the party’s youth wing rally in Chennai

CHENNAI: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, led by actor Vijayakanth, has urged the Centre to stop any direct or indirect military assistance to the Sri Lankan army.

In a resolution passed at a youth rally here on Saturday, the DMDK called upon political parties in the State that are part of the Congress-led UPA to withdraw support to the government.

A resolution adopted at the party’s youth wing conference accused the Sri Lankan government of denying food and medicine to innocent Tamils who were being targeted in the name of military offensive.

“They have become refugees in their own country. They are not even able to bury the bodies of those killed in the war.”

The resolution urged the Centre to send food and medicines through the Red Cross or the United Nations.

Another resolution termed the Re. 1 a kg rice scheme a ploy to divert people’s attention from the steep increase in prices of essential commodities.

The AIADMK and the DMK had failed to formulate schemes to augment power supply in the State.

They had never acted with any farsightedness, the resolution said.

The conference called upon the youth to take a pledge against dowry, violence and terrorism.

Earlier, Mr. Vijayakanth viewed the rally from a specially-erected dais near the Munroe Statue on Anna Salai. The Island Grounds, venue of the conference, was bursting at its seams.

DMDK women's wing state-wide protest against price rise

Chennai, Nov 9: Condemning the price rise in the essential commodities as well as the power cut prevailing in Tamil Nadu, the women's wing of DMDK headed by actor-politician Vijayakant would hold a state-wide agitation on November 16.

The agitation would be staged in front of the district collectorates, Vijayakant said in a statement here.

The power crisis had not only denied new employment opportunities but had also led to emplyees of various factories losing their jobs, he said adding small and medium enterprises had been largely affected.

He slammed both the central and state governments for failing to take steps to control the rising prices of essential commodities. - Agencies

Vote for our courage, says DMDK chief

Vujayakant kicks off election campaign

CHENNAI: "Vote for my party candidates and we will ensure you that we will keep the ruling party on its toes on civic issues," Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) president Vijayakant thundered at a public meeting in the city on Saturday evening, after launching the party's campaign for the upcoming Chennai Corporation byelections. He appealed to voters to encourage the courage and conviction of his candidates in opposing the ruling DMK combine in the elections slated for February 18.

"Vote for the lamp symbol to light up your lives," he said to a massive crowd that had gathered at Shenoy Nagar in Aminjikarai, where the public meeting was arranged. The entire region was awash with lights and the DMDK cadre lit up the skies with firecrackers to accompany their leader's speech. The DMDK's 63 candidates are the major challengers to the ruling DMK combine in the election that would see byelections to 67 wards. The AIADMK-led combine has boycotted the elections. Though polls were announced for 100 of the 155 wards in the city, 33 candidates were declared winners after contestants in their respective wards withdrew.

Mr. Vijayakant pointed out that the Chennai Corporation had suddenly launched an anti-mosquito campaign in the city, so close to the elections. "Much of the fogging operations in the city is done now because of the by-elections," he charged. "Just imagine what would happen if they (ruling party) had no opposition at all in the Corporation council. Who would stand up for your rights?"

Panruti Ramamurthy and other DMDK leaders also spoke. Vijayakant also introduced his party's candidates. The DMDK cadre charged that several autodrivers were reluctant to carry out election campaigns for them. But they insisted that they would take up intensive campaigning in the coming days.

I will do an Obama here: Vijayakanth

News Dated : Times of India,22 Jun 2008

Its Very Old News,But Obama Has Won Now. Our Captain Will Also Prove..

CHENNAI: US presidential hopeful Barack Obama is inspirational not only to his

fellow democrats but also to wannabe chief ministers in Tamil
Nadu.

Actor-politician Vijayakanth, who seeks to bring about a change in state politics from the alternating rule of the DMK and AIADMK, draws a parallel to Obama's march towards the White House to that of his ambitious journey towards Fort St George, the seat of the state government.

"The whites and blacks were at loggerheads for ages. But Obama is going to create history by becoming America's first black President. Isn't that a remarkable change? Likewise, I will also bring about a change in the state. What's needed today is change and it will definitely happen," said Vijayakanth in an interview to The Times of India.

With Tamil Nadu's political scene hotting up in the wake of the PMK's exit from the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance, actor-politician Vijayakanth may grab more political attention as elections draw near.

Even as rumours are agog that both the DMK and the AIADMK camps are wooing him ahead of the Lok Sabha elections,

'Captain,' as he is fondly called by his fans and partymen, chooses to keep his cards close to the chest.

Vijayakanth, founder-president of the three-year-old Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), exuded confidence that his party would win three to five Lok Sabha seats on its own.

At the same time, he also gave an indication that he was not averse to an electoral tie-up, possibly with the Congress. While a senior Congress leader conceded that the groundwork for an alliance with the DMDK was already prepared and it would align with the Congress 99 %, Vijayakanth's replies showed that he was in no hurry with such alliance plans.

"As of now, I want to contest the elections alone. Unlike in the 2006 Assembly elections, we are adopting a strategy for the Lok Sabha polls by identifying winnable seats and working hard to strengthen our base in those constituencies. I am confident of winning three to five seats on our own. Winning even two Lok Sabha seats will fetch recognition to my party from the Election Commission," he said.

Asked whether he would categorically rule out an alliance for the Lok Sabha polls, he said he had all along been maintaining the stand that he would contest alone.

"This is my stand now. It may change another day," he said. Not denying that he was being sent feelers by various parties including the AIADMK, he said, "I am the bridegroom and I should say whether I like the bride or not." Vijayakanth, who recently opened a party office in New Delhi and called on CPM general secretary Prakash Karat and Congress leader Sheila Dixit, said those were only courtesy calls and he had no ambition to play a role in national politics.

"My target is only the next Assembly election, whether it comes in 2011 or next year. People ridicule me when I say I will become the next chief minister, but every one has a right to make such claims," he said. He also ruled out aligning with his film colleagues, Sarath Kumar and Karthik, who have also launched political outfits of their own.

Turning to his film career, the Tamil film industry's angry young man in the early 80s walked down memory lane, recalling his struggle as an up and coming artiste in the initial days.

The discrimination and step-motherly treatment meted out to 24-year-old Vijayaraj (his original name), who came to Kollywood from Madurai with a dream of making it big in the industry, only strengthened his resolve to achieve his goal.

"I used to sit at a roadside laundry on Dhandapani Street in T Nagar and watch the rich and famous from the film industry passing by," the actor, who had acted in more than 150 films, reminisced. He said he had to struggle in the early days, as many did not want to act with him, and big banner film-makers did not come forward to do films with him.

"There was discrimination even in the food served to us. While heroes and heroines were treated to sumptuous food and fruit juices, we were served only sambar rice or curd rice in packets and tea. The rage that was seething inside made me resolve that I would start my own production company one day and treat everyone alike — from the light boy to the hero. Today, all those working in my company get the same food," he said.

As a hardcore MGR fan, Vijayakanth rued that he never had an opportunity to meet his idol except on a single occasion at a marriage function. "As I was very passionate about Tamil and got to meet Kalaignar (DMK president M Karunanidhi) quite often, I was seen as pro-Kalaignar." However, he was able to win the affection of MGR's wife, Janaki, who gifted him the campaign van used by the late charismatic leader.

Vijayakanth still continues his association with MGR by donating Rs 50,000 every year on his birthday to the school for the speech and hearing impaired functioning in Ramavaram garden.

Teams formed to arrest Vijayakanth!!!!!

CHENNAI: Chennai police have formed five special teams to arrest actor-politician

Vijayakanth and other accused named in the first
information report in connection with
the mob attack on comedian Vadivelu’s house in Saligramam last Sunday. The teams will be headed by Manohar, assistant commissioner of police (Vadapalani), and local inspectors.

Vijaykanth, however, has accused the ruling DMK of framing him and instigating the mob which stoned the comedian’s house. Whether the founder of the fledgling DMDK, who has positioned himself as a political alternative to both Jayalalitha and chief minister M Karunanidhi, gets arrested or not, is uncertain. But the war between the action hero and the comedian has added to the long list of rivalries on which politics in Tamil Nadu has thrived.

“We have interrogated actor Vadivelu, based on his complaint. Security guard Chintamani and manager Velusamy did not notice the registration numbers of two-wheelers used by the attackers. We have interrogated at least 30 people including several neighbours, vendors and autorickshaw drivers, who witnessed the incident. Most of them told us that they can identify the attackers if they were paraded before them,” a senior police officer said.

The special teams have been assigned to probe all possible angles. Three of the teams have been instructed to pursue the arrest of the named and unnamed accused listed in the first information report. “Since Vijayakanth has been named as the first accused in the FIR, we are looking for him, as he has been booked under the non-bailable Section 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (II) (threatening to murder), apart from other sections of Indian Penal Code,” the police officer said.

Meanwhile, the political spat between the Kollywood actors had its violent echo in the textile town of Coimbatore as the DMDK labour wing office came under attack on Tuesday afternoon. Six members of a Hindu Makkal Katchi faction, which supported comedian Vadivelu, allegedly went on the rampage at the DMDK labour wing office at Sungam.

Led by the district president of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, Anbu Mari, the group pulled down the thatched shed of the parking lot, burnt the party flag and damaged the furniture and name board of the DMDK office.

Within minutes, the police control room alerted the Singanallur police, who launched a search for Anbu Mari and his supporters. As the police cornered Anbu Mari, he and three others surrendered at the police station. Two more surrendered later.

According to the police inspector, R Srinivasulu, the group allegedly attacked the DMDK office as some of the members of that party had telephonically threatened Anbu Mari for issuing statements in support of Vadivelu.

Anbu Mari is said to have lodged a complaint against the DMDK members at the Peelamedu police station. However, as he was “unhappy” with the police action, he staged a dharna on Tuesday morning. After the protest dharna, Anbu Mari allegedly went straight to the DMDK office and launched an attack. All six members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi have been arrested.

Case of attempted murder against Vijayakanth- by Comedian Vadivelu

A case of 'attempted murder' has been registered against DMDK leader and actor Vijayakanth and 30 others at Chennai's Virugambakkam police station on a complaint made by comedian Vadivelu whose Saligramam house and office were stoned by some 30 unidentified persons on Sept.21 (Sunday) morning.

Vadivelu, accompanied by his lawyer, Raja Senthur Pandi, went to the police station soon after the violent incident and lodged the complaint.

In the complaint, Vadivelu alleged that the attack on his house and office had been carried out at the instigation of Vijayakanth

Nine Cr.P.C.Sections under which the case has been registered against Vijayakanth and 30 others are 307 (attempted murder), 502/2 (threatening with dangerous weapons), 448 (trespass), 336 (endangering lives), 147 (causing disturbance to public peace), 148 (intent to kill), 427 (causing damage to property) and 323 (causing injuries).

In addition, Vijayakanth has also been charged under Sec. 120B (conspiracy).

Police Commissioner Sekhar confirmed that Vijayakanth has been charged with attempted murder under Sec. 307.

According to Vadivelu, a big stone fell near his son Subramani in the house. They came out of the house and saw some 20 motorbikes parked in front of the house. Those who threw stones at the house shouted that "...you (Vadivelu) have talked badly about our leader...you cannot live oppose us...we will bomb your house ...burn it..." Vadivelu further said he knew that they were Vijayakanth's men and the attack had been engineered to prevent him (Vadivelu) from going to the Saidapet Magistrate's court where a case against Vijayakanth was to come up for hearing the following day.

DMDK youth wing secretary Sudhish, however, denied the involvement of Vijayakanth's men in the incident. It was a false case foisted on Vijayakanth on instructions from "Tiruchi" (implying Chief Minister Karunanidhi who was at Tiruchi on Sunday). "In the morning the police said the case was registered against 10 men. Later the number increased to 20 and in the night it became 30."

DMDK headquarters secretary Parthasarathy charged that Vijayakanth's men were falsely implicated when actually DMK men were behind the attack. The DMK could not digest the fact that Marxist leaders met Vijayakanth and held talks with him

Mudhalvan Arjun to join Vijayakanth’s DMDK

In Tamil Nadu, politics and pancake seems to go hand in hand. In fact cinema seems to be the first step to reach the political destination for many fledgling politicians. These days the stars are nurturing their dreams of governing Tamil Nadu right from the day of their entry in to the tinsel world. Though this kind of precedence is not set in north India, south seems to be comfortable with it.

Come elections, we would read the news of stars joining different parties and some times two to three parties a day also. Party hopping is an accepted norm here especially when people have short memory. Politicians also appear to understand the clout these people enjoy and are eager to exploit it to their benefit. Whether it is a healthy trend or not, only time would tell.

We had mentioned some time back that Action King Arjun was contemplating joining politics but had not made up his mind about the party to which he would owe his allegiance.

The suspense is over and in all likelihood; he would be joining hands with captain’s DMDK soon. The results of the just declared Madurai by poll and the local body elections in the state clearly indicate that Captain has arrived. Cine stars who were being treated shabbily at the two Dravidian parties are sure to find solace in captain now. Print and the visual media are screaming from their rooftops about the splendid performance of DMDK. In Kollywood, Arjun’s joining with DMDK is certain to usher in a new movement of stars to captain’s territory.

“If responsible position is bestowed upon me, I am ready to join DMDK right away”, Arjun had reportedly told the media. We only hope that Arjun brings to life his Mudhalvan escapades in real life also. Good Luck Arjun.
