Political parties in Tamil Nadu are not just relying on policies and ideologies anymore. They are now fighting for satellite space to win votes. With major political parties like the DMK, the AIADMK, the Congress and the PMK using channels as propaganda tools, the idiot box has become a ‘must have’ for seasoned as well as aspiring political leaders in the state.

In keeping with the trend, actor-politician Vijayakanth, who launched his Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in 2005, will also have his own channel very soon. The DMDK channel will be called Captain TV after Captain Vijayakanth, who was given the nickname by his fans after his film Captain Prabhakaran, proved a huge hit. The channel is slated to go on air on April 14, 2009.

DMDK youth wing secretary and Vijayakanth’s brother-in-law L K Sudheesh, who heads the Captain Media Pvt Company Ltd, said the party needed a vehicle to carry its messages to the masses. “We have completed all the groundwork and is in the process of recruiting staff. The channel will be launched on Tamil New Year’s day,” he said.

While the Captain TV would be mostly an entertainment channel, it would also beam Vijayakanth’s political programmes and messages. “Both the print and electronic media in Tamil Nadu are attempting to black out our captain. Despite our leader drawing a huge crowd at public meetings, the media simply chooses to turn a blind eye and has never portrayed the true picture. Hence, the necessity to have a TV channel of our own,” official close to the development said.
