Successive electoral defeats and defection of his second rank leaders and cadres has swayed DMDK founder Vijayakanth from his resolve to go it alone until he provides an alternative to the two Dravidian parties -- the DMK and the AIADMK.

He has finally opted for an alliance to make him politically relevant and arrest further erosion of his mass base.

A resolution to that effect was passed by the party’s general council held at Vanagaram in Chennai on Saturday. It has authorized DMDK chief to hold talks with other like-minded parties in this connection.

It also authorised Vijayakanth to have parleys with leaders of those political outfits, who share a common vision with the DMDK and expressed their wish to align with them. The meeting was presided over by party presidium chairman Panruti S Ramachandran.

Launching a scathing attack on the chief minister M.Karunanidhi and his family as a whole, Vijayakanth told the general council members that he was not afraid of any force. “Karunanidhi says the DMDK has lost its strength. DMDK is still strong,” he said. He flayed the DMK for spending crores to buy voters in the by-election and is ready to face any challenge.
