SALEM: The DMDK on Sunday, was able to pull off a mega show, proving that it had the crowd engineering and event management skills that any mature party could boast off.
As DMDK founder Vijaykanth’s brother-in-law and the party’s youth wing leader L K Sudhish put it, “Some crores of rupees are being lavished for the jamboree.”
Christened Makkal Urimai Meetppu Manadu (People’s rights restoration conference), the meet, according to senior party office bearers, was aimed at warming up the cadre for the elections and also to put a show of strength to political parties. This, according to them, would place the party in a better bargaining position during seat negotiations in case the DMDK becomes part of a political alliance.
Even party’s official communiqué had reiterated that the arrangements were being made on a grand scale at an expenditure of “several crores of rupees”.
To put the grand scale of the proceedings into perspective, the conference venue measured 66 acres of open space at Gajalnaikenpati, on the outskirts of Salem.
The stage measured 6000 sqft, while the arch at the entrance of the conference venue, was 50 feet high and 240 feet wide, according to the organisers.
Parking lots covering an area of 300 acres in 12 select places around the venue to prevent congestion on the main roads, were also set up. The party’s security wing had been entrusted with the responsibility of managing parking arrangements.
As many as 25 ambulances, with four qualified medical teams and a tie up with a private hospital, formed the emergency medical team put in place by the party’s doctors wing.
Five fire tenders had been sourced and as many as 2500 men and 500 women from the Thondar padai and Mahalir ani (Security wing) took care of security and helped usher in the steady flow of participants.
The party’s lawyers wing had been coordinating with police whenever trouble broke out.
A network of wireless walkie-talkies and a central control room relayed instructions down the line to various levels of leadership.
