CHENNAI: Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) chief Vijayakanth slammed the Congress and the DMK for failing to provide security for the unarmed and innocent fishermen from Tamil Nadu, many of whom have died in attacks by the Sri Lankan navy.
In a statement, he said, “A stage has come when we should take a decision on whether these kinds of governments were needed for the country and the State.”
The Sri Lankan Naval personnel reportedly strangulated a Nagapatinam fisherman Jayakumar to death while he and others were fishing southeast of Kodiakarai in Vedaranyam on Saturday night.
The actor-turned politician criticised the Coast Guard and queried as to what happened to the assurance given to the State chief minister by its commander that the State’s fisherfolk would be protected from attacks by the Sri Lankan navy.
Vijayakanth said the alleged killing of TN fisherman took place around the same time as Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee was in Chennai meeting Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for talks on the forthcoming Assembly elections.
As usual, the Central minister condemned the barbaric act and flew back to Delhi. For his part, Karunanidhi announced a sloatium and completed his routine. But, for the affected fisherman’s family the loss was irreparable, Vijayakanth said.
The DMDK chief said that in recent times, not a single day passed without reports of Sri Lankan naval personnel assaulting innocent and poor fishermen. A few days ago, V Pandian of Jagadapattinam near Pudukottai was killed by the Lankan navy.
